HHM: Dominican Republic

Description
"Dominican Republic is known for beauty, culture, food, and sports; yet somehow, we’re shrouded by criticism. There are various stigmas surrounding the country today, however the biggest struggle within DR is an outdated phrase. “Mejorar la raza,” which blatantly translates to “improve the race.” There was a time when Dominicans were attempting to elope with one another with the intention of manipulating their offspring & future generations. Our people were marrying into European/white families in an effort to improve the Dominican race. They defined “race improvement” with fair skin color, hair and prominent physical features. I know I’m a little on the lighter side, but that’s just something that’s always stuck with me about my country. Our island’s people, food, music, views and culture are uniquely our own. Our beauty is one of a kind. Why invite a new age of colonialism into our country to gentrify our heritage and tradition? I want my people to know that we’ve marched, fought and accomplished a great deal of freedom within our country. I hope we can continue to live the Dominican experience as intended."
