Description
"Being Colombian - American daughters of immigrant parents, it has shaped us into who we are today. Being raised to become bilingual and fluent, our parents would solely speak Spanish at home, and we learned English from going to school. This helped us to communicate well with them, and also our family members nearby, or far away, who mostly spoke Spanish. Futhermore, our household was very musical. With lots of Salsa, Cumbia, Merengue, Vallenato and other Latin genres being played. This gave us the flavor of the rhythms from our parents' motherland that we would learn to dance and sing along to. Our father, who passed away about three years ago, was a musician and percussionist. So he always wanted us to feel connected culturally and musically to our Colombian roots. On top of that, there is only appreciation for the delicious and savory food from Colombia. Both of our parents loved cooking. So we were lucky to get a taste of arepas, sancocho, ajiaco, bandeja paisa, and empanadas. And that's just to name a few. Eating together at the dinner table, sharing the food of our culture, brought us together and comforted our parents. Since they were far away from their homeland. I think most of all, the notion of 'Familia' and being together, pa’ las que sea has made our family connection sacred. Even through the imperfections, we’ve always had each others back. We are grateful for our Colombian parents. Who raised us with their culture, music, language, food and principles. Las hermanas Carvajal son orgullosamente Colombianas aqui en Estados Unidos."
